Future Streets

“Calzada” is a street of great historical value, located in the Historic Center of Oaxaca, a UNESCO heritage city. The 1.5 km stretch is distinctive by its flowing curves and 19 small square-plazas. It is splits apart the Historic Center and the colorful neighborhood of Jalatlaco, whose origin can be traced since precolonial times. Calzada is strategic to strengthen the resilient development of the city. This project aims to create a resilient street which can help mitigate the challenges of climate change, especially water management and “heat islands”. In addition, we aim to improve the organization of mobility, the use of public areas, and the urban image. The tender was issued by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), a department under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, The Netherlands.
